We are located in the Fairfax and Bonesteel area of South Dakota. This part of the state does not have a lot of big cities, just many small, friendly communities.

We continue to have mild winters which have been very easy on our wild bird population in our part of the state. Our winter temperatures have been above average and very little snow. We expect that, with a large carryover of mature game birds from last year and a good spring hatch, the bird hunting will be great again this year. Our hunting operation is set up for groups of 4 to 10 hunters.

HUNTING LOCATIONS AND TRANSPORTATION

Our pheasant, grouse and prairie chicken hunts are located in the Fairfax and Bonesteel area. Sioux Falls is the closest commercial airport, it is about 2 1/2 hours from our operation. Sioux City, Iowa is 3 hours away and also handles commercial flights. Private and smaller commuter aircraft can be accommodated at Wagner (27 miles), Mitchell (90 miles) and Yankton (90 miles) airports.

Waterfowl Licenses

Waterfowl licenses for the Lake Andes area are allocated by lottery. Hunters have to apply for waterfowl licenses by August. Applications are usually available by June and usually run out by September. If you are prompt in getting your application in you should get a license. We are the only unit in South Dakota (100A-33) in which the waterfowl license is good for the whole year. We also have some licenses available over the counter which have restrictions on areas that can be hunted.

DOGS

We believe part of the fun of a hunt is watching a fine dog work. Hunters are encouraged to bring their trained gun dogs. We have several fine labs that we use for pheasant and goose hunting. If you are interested in bringing your dog, we can help you with your planning to assure it is a great experience for you and your dog.

HUNTING and SAFETY

We enjoy a fine hunt and try to have fun while doing it. There are three things we will not tolerate while hunting: drinking of alcohol while hunting, shooting on the ground or too close to the dogs and trespassing on adjacent land.

We stress safety and we use the right precautions to prevent accidents. We request that all hunters have and wear safety glasses an orange vest and an orange hat. All hunts at Gary's Guide Service are professionally guided, we do not offer un-guided hunts.

Walleye Fishing

We guide the fishing in the Pickstown area of the Missouri river and, with special arrangements, on other sections of the river. The limit this year is 4 Walleye per person per day. I have 30 years experience guiding Walleye fishermen on the Missouri River. I have seen all the ups and downs of the fishery, 2010 promises to be another great fishing season.
